Who are The Levellers in my life?
Over the decades, their energetic live performances and timeless tracks have secured them a dedicated fan base, making them an essential reference for anyone delving into British alternative music. Join me as I share some of my favourite tracks from this iconic band.
Emerging from Brighton in the late 1980s, The Levellers quickly established themselves as one of the most influential and enduring bands in the British folk rock scene. With a name inspired by the 17th-century radical democracy movement, the band's music is a seamless blend of rock, folk, and punk influences, underscored by socially-conscious lyrics that resonate with fans both old and new. Driven by fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars, The Levellers' songs capture a spirit of rebellion, unity, and hope, often echoing the frustrations and aspirations of the common man.
The Boatman
From the opening strains, "The Boatman" isn't just a song; it's an anthem for the wandering soul. The Levellers, with their innate ability to capture the essence of free-spirited living, invite listeners to embark on a journey with this track. I come back to this song time and time again.
One Way
From the heart-pounding beats to the defiant lyrics, "One Way" stands tall as one of The Levellers' most powerful calls to arms. The track encapsulates the essence of standing one's ground, facing adversity head-on, and refusing to be swayed by naysayers.
In case you have forgotten, or were never aware, just how big the Levellers were once upon a time, here they are headlining Glastonbury in 1994.
Carry me
Its haunting melody weaves tales of vulnerability, but not of defeat; rather, it is a testament to the idea that together, we can rise above.
What a Beautiful Day
Amidst the clamor of life, there are songs that stand out, not just for their melody, but for their ability to remind us of the beauty that surrounds us daily. This song is one of their better known songs and for a long time I thought it was just too 'poppy', but it has the ability to brighten my day at any time.
Elation
This is not a song that stood out hugely for me, but this version, from their acoustic tour of 2018, has a real beauty about it. Love it.
Down by the River o'
A recently released song, I'm including it because nearly every morning my 6 year old son goes into the kitchen and asks alexa to play this song. Thats good enough reason to include it.
Battle of the Beanfield
"Battle of the Beanfield" is one of the standout tracks by The Levellers and holds historical and socio-political significance. At its core, "Battle of the Beanfield" is more than just a musical piece; it’s a gritty historical account and social commentary. The song draws its inspiration from an actual event that took place on June 1, 1985, near Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England.
For those familiar with the events of that fateful day, the track evokes vivid memories and emotions. For newcomers, it provides an audial journey into a defining moment of British countercultural history.
The Exodus
Through a powerful mix of rhythm and lyricism, The Levellers, in their quintessential style, don’t paint a romanticised picture; instead, they provide a mirror, reflecting the real struggles, hopes, and small rebellions that define our existence.
Truth is
Every time I play "Truth Is," it's a fresh reminder that music has the power to challenge, inspire, and resonate on such a personal level. "Truth Is" delves into the complexities of what 'truth' really means in our ever-changing world. Instead of spoon-feeding answers, the song made me reflect on my own beliefs and the realities I hold dear.
The Riverflow
Ah, "Riverflow." Just the mere mention of this track sends a rush of nostalgia coursing through me. The Levellers have crafted many anthems throughout their illustrious career, but for me, this one occupies a special corner of my heart. Maybe it’s the infectious energy or the undeniable call to stand against the current, but something about this song just resonates deeply.
Well, thats a quick summary of a few unforgettable Levellers songs. I could add 20 or 30 without any hesitation, but this gives you a good start if hearing them for the first time.
Navigating through the tapestry of music The Levellers have gifted us, it's evident that their tracks aren't mere songs; they're soulful chronicles, capturing the essence of generations and emotions. From the passionate defiance of "Riverflow" to the introspective musings of "Truth Is," their music has been a guiding light, a source of solace, and a call to action for many, including myself.
To all the fellow Levellers fans out there, and to those just discovering their magic — here's to the timeless journey of music that speaks to the heart, challenges the mind, and resonates with the soul. Until the next song, keep the music playing and the spirit alive.
